GETTING STARTED: Download the PDF for a set of portable project instructions. Read through all of the instructions before beginning.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Approximately 41" x 51". Finished height of triangle: 5".

MATERIALS:

  • EZ Quilting™ 60-Degree Triangle Ruler
  • General sewing supplies
  • Quilt basting pins 1" size
  • Quilting thread to match fabrics
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Mat
  • Ruler

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Gray and white print fabrics: 1 collection of fat quarters at least 3 yds total
  • Turquoise accent fabric: 1 fat quarter or scraps
  • Orange accent fabric: 1 fat quarter or scraps
  • Binding fabric: 3/4 yd
  • Backing fabric: 1-3/4 yds
  • Batting: Crib size

CUTTING THE FABRIC:
For this quilt, 5" finished height 60-degree triangles are used. The cut height of the triangle is 5-1/2" so use the solid 5-1/2" cut line on the ruler for the base of the triangle. Cut 5-1/2" strips across the fabric and triangles may be quickly cut across the strip by aligning the top of the ruler with the top edge of the strip and the bottom edge of the strip with the 5-1/2" cut line on the ruler. Cut both sides of the ruler for one triangle. Rotate the ruler aligning the top and bottom edges of the strip with the same ruler lines and the just cut edge of the strip with the side of the ruler to cut another triangle.

  • From the variety of gray and white print fabrics, cut 142 – 5-1/2" cut height 60-degree triangles using the 60-degree Triangle Ruler as directed above.
  • From the turquoise accent fabric, cut 4 – 5-1/2" cut height 60-degree triangles using the 60-degree Triangle Ruler as directed above.
  • From the orange accent fabric, cut 4 – 5-1/2" cut height 60-degree triangles using the 60-degree Triangle Ruler as directed above.
  • From the binding fabric, cut 5 – 2-1/2" x 42" strips. Trim the selvedges. If desired, the binding strips may be cut on the diagonal to make bias binding. A total of 200" binding is needed.

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS:
All seams are sewn right sides together with 1/4" seam allowance.

Step 2

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP—See PDF instructions for diagram:
Layout the 150 triangles on a large design space in a pleasing array of 10 rows of 15 triangles each. As shown in the quilt picture, the triangles alternatively point upward and downward across the row. Note: The sides of the design are uneven and will be trimmed after the rows are sewn together.

Sew the triangles into rows. Press the seams in each row all one direction, changing the direction in alternate rows.

Stitch the rows together matching seam intersections. Press the seams any direction.

Trim the sides of the quilt top to square off. Note: Be sure to leave a seam allowance for the binding when trimming.

Step 3

FINISHING THE QUILT—See PDF instructions for diagram:
Create a quilt backing that is at least 4" larger than the quilt top.

On a flat surface, make a quilt sandwich by layering the backing fabric right side down, then the batting, then the quilt top right side up. Baste the quilt every three to four inches with 1" quilt basting safety pins.

Quilt as desired.

After quilting, baste stitch a scant 1/4" around the outside edges of the quilt to keep the layers together.

Stitch the 5 binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold and press in half lengthwise to make double binding.

Sew the binding to the quilt front along the quilt edge.

Trim the backing and batting a generous 1/8" wider than the seam allowance.

Flip the binding to the back, ensuring that approximately 3/8" binding is showing on the front of the quilt, and stitch down with matching thread.

Make a label with your name and date and sew it onto the back of your quilt.
