GETTING STARTED:

ABBREVIATIONS:
beg—begin(ning); ch—chain; rnd(s)—round(s); RS—right side; sc—single crochet

SIZE:
Approximately 2" (5 cm) wide x 4" (10 cm) tall

MATERIALS:

  • #4 medium weight yarn: Approximately 20 yds (18 m) in each color Green, Pink and Brown
  • Boye® crochet hook US size G/6 (4.25 mm)
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch Marker
  • White glass Ball Head straight pins
  • Small plain silver straight pins
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Small teacup

Gauge is not critical for this project.

Step 2

DIRECTIONS
CACTUS

With green and leaving a long tail, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in the second ch from the hook. Do not join. Place marker in first sc to identify beginning of round.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around—16 sc.
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around
Next Rnds: Repeat Rnd 3 until cactus is approximately 4" (10 cm) tall or desired height. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Step 3

CACTUS FLOWER
With pink, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in the second ch from the hook. Do not join. Place marker in first sc to identify beginning of round.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around—16 sc.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in the first sc, sc in the next sc; repeat from * around—24 sc.
Rnds 4-5: Sc in each stitch around. Gently stuff with fiberfill at the end of Rnd 5.
Rnd 6: *Sc2tog, sc, repeat from * around—16 sc.
Rnd 7: Sc2tog around—8 sc.
Finish stuffing; fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Step 4

CACTUS DIRT
With brown and leaving a long tail, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in the second ch from the hook. Do not join. Place marker in first sc to identify beginning of round.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around—16 sc.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in the first sc, sc in the next sc, repeat from * around—24 sc.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in the first sc, sc in the next 2 sc, repeat from * around—32 sc.
Rnd 5: *2 sc in the first sc, sc in the next 3 sc, repeat from * around—40 sc.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Step 5

ASSEMBLY
Lightly stuff cactus
with fiberfill. Thread beginning yarn tail onto the yarn needle. Flatten cactus gently and sew along center through both sides to split cactus into two sections. With ending yarn tail sew through center of the other two sides to form four "spines" on cactus.
Using cactus flower yarn tail, sew the cactus flower to the beginning end of cactus. Weave in ends.
Using beginning tail from cactus dirt, sew bottom of cactus to the center of cactus dirt. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Place white glass Ball Head pins in Cactus Flower.
Place a few silver straight pins in cactus so the tips of the pins are exposed to simulate thorns.
Fill teacup with fiberfill and place finished cactus on top.
