Step 1

GETTING STARTED

SIZE
Instructions are for a baby one to six months old. Note: If you use all e-wrap stitches in the hat instead of the crossed stockinette described in the pattern, the hat will be looser and will fit a baby up to 12 months old.

MATERIALS

  • #4 Worsted Weight Yarn: 4 oz (115 g) Tan (color A), 1 oz (28 g) each of White (color B), Gold (color C), Dark Brown (color D), (Original model made using Bernat Super Value 100% acrylic in Topaz #53514 (A), White #07391 (B), Bronze #53609 (C) and Walnut #07483 (D)
  • Boye® 30-peg round BLUE loom
  • Small piece of black felt for eyes
  • Yarn needle

GAUGE
10 sts x 16 rows in Crossed Stockinette using 2 strands of #4 yarn held together = 4" (10 cm). Take time to check gauge.

SPECIAL STITCHES
Crossed Stockinette Stitch Pattern:
Rnd 1:
EWK all pegs.
Rnd 2: FK all pegs.
Rep Rnds 1 & 2 for Crossed Stockinette stitch pattern.

Step 2

DIRECTIONS
HAT

With two strands of color A held together, CO using EW method.
Rnd 1: FK around.
Next Rnds: Work Crossed Stockinette Stitch Pattern until hat measures 7" (19 cm) or desired height.
Next Rnd: Shift the lps on all the odd pegs to the adjacent even peg. With the WY sl the odd pegs and FK two lps over one lp on all even pegs.
Bind off using Gathered Bind Off.

Step 3

EARS (MAKE 2)
Using one strand of A and 10 pegs, work Drawstring Cast On as follows:
Place slip knot on anchor peg leaving a 14" (35.5 cm) yarn tail. Using pegs 1-10, weave the yarn in front of the odd numbered pegs (1, 3, 5, 7 & 9) and behind even numbered pegs 2-10. Turn on peg 10; FK all odd pegs and slip the even pegs with yarn in front.
Rows 1-6: FK 10 pegs.
Row 7: Shift the loop on pegs 1 and 10 to pegs 2 and 9. FK 2 lps over 1, FK 6, FK 2 lps over 1—8 pegs.
Row 8: FK.
Row 9: Dec and knit as Row 7—6 pegs.
Row 10: FK.
Row 11: Dec and knit as Row 7—4 pegs.
Row 12: FK.
Finishing Ear Tufts: Cut yarn leaving an 8" (20 cm) tail. Work gathered BO on remaining sts. Fold ear tuft in half and use BO tail to sew sides together. Fasten off and weave in end. Cinch CO edge until piece measures about 1" (2.5 cm) wide; tie knot to secure; use remaining tail to sew tufts to hat.

Step 4

BEAK
With two strands of color D and five pegs, work Drawstring Cast On as for ear tufts.
Rows 1-5: FK.
Row 6: Dec 2 sts as for Ear Tufts—3 pegs.
Row 7: FK.
Row 8: Move lp from pegs 1 and 3 to center peg; knit two bottom lps over top lp. FK last lp; cut yarn leaving approximately 18" (46 cm) tail. Cinch CO edge closed and fasten off.

Step 5

EYES (MAKE 2)
With one strand of color C and 14 pegs and leaving a long yarn tail, work a Drawstring Cast On as for ear tufts.
Rows 1-3: FK across. Cut color C leaving a 4" (10 cm) tail; join two strands of color B.
Row 4: Using two strands of color B as one, FK across.
Bind off using Flat Panel Bind Off method and leaving a long tail for sewing. Cinch CO edge closed tightly. Fasten off and secure tail. Thread BO yarn tail onto yarn needle and sew sides together to form circle; fasten off.
Cut 2 circles from black felt about ¾" (2 cm) diameter. Sew circles to center of eyes with contrast color yarn.

Step 6

FINISHING
EAR TUFTS

Position base of ear tufts about 2" (5 cm) apart on the top of hat. Use remaining tail to stitch ear tufts in place; fasten off and weave in tail.

Step 7

BEAK
With the ending yarn tail toward the bottom, center beak about 1" (2.5 cm) above brim and stitch beak to hat. Trim and secure the yarn tail.

Step 8

EYES
Using the picture as reference, position both eyes just above and on either side of the beak; sew in place. Weave in all tails.
