Rated 4 out of 5 by Bun2 from Simple retro design Just completed this dress in a lightweight denim, Overall I'm very happy with it but I would definately make a few minor adjustments when I make it again (which I will). I am a small frame and 168cm tall but the dress was still way too long, I had to take 11cm off the finished length to bring it to my knee which is the length depicted in the pattern cover drawing. I also tapered the size 10 skirt to a size 8 as it appeared quite wide. I traced the pattern onto baking paper and kept the original so I can make these changes next time. I would also add a little more room at the front arm pit but thats a personal choice. The main issue was the length of the shoulder straps which came out too short. To get around this major problem I had to omit the button holes and fix the straps directly to the dress and stiched the buttons as detail onto the back. I can still just about climb into the dress if I put it over my head!! I wouldn't recommend this style if you are full busted as being a sixties design there is not much room in that area!! I also had to make a box pleat at the front as the fabric I chose was a bit heavy for the gathering detail. I'm a beginner/intermediate sewer and I found it quite tricky to construct around the straps. Being plain my fabric didn't allow much room for error. Next time I would choose a lighter weight cotton/linen and maybe a patterned design. Having said all this I do love this dress, it looks great and is very original, my family are very impressed with my creation.
