Child's and Adults' Spats

Add a dash of charm to your Red Riding hood costume with easy-to-make spats sewn from our FREE downloadable pattern, available to fit children sizes 3-8 and misses' adult sizes XS-XL. With a quick change of fabric these are also great accessories for a Pirate, Steampunk or Victorian look!

Materials Needed:

  • 1 yard of 44" wide fabric – we recommend cotton types such as broadcloth, lightweight twill, damask, and chintz. For something more opulent choose brocade, satin velveteen or taffeta. Faux leather or suede makes a boot-like accessory perfect for Pirate and Steampunk looks.
  • 1 yard of 44" wide lining fabric
  • 10" x 6" piece of coordinating fabric for tabs
  • 1 yard of 22" to 25" wide lightweight fusible or non-fusible interfacing – this is optional, but we recommend using interfacing for a crisp look that holds its shape while wearing. TIP: use non-fusible interfacing for faux leather, faux suede and fabrics with nap, such as velveteen.

  1. Assemble pattern as per Page Pattern Layout shown on page "A" of downloaded pattern, overlapping pages and matching cutting lines. Tape together once assembled, forming a single pattern sheet.
  2. For all spats pieces, cut two from fabric, two from lining, and two from interfacing.
  3. For tab pieces, cut four from fabric and two from interfacing.
  4. Apply interfacing to WRONG side of two tabs. If using fusible interfacing, follow manufacturer's directions to fuse to fabric; if using non-fusible interfacing, stitch interfacing to fabric using a long machine stitch and stitching approximately 1/4" from the cut edge.
  5. Place one interfaced tab with one tab without interfacing together with RIGHT sides facing, matching all cut edges. Pin along curved edge, leaving notched edge open. Repeat with remaining tabs.
  6. Using a straight machine stitch, stitch curved edges of tabs in a 5/8" seam. Press seam to blend stitches. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and clip curves.
  7. Turn tabs RIGHT side out and press. Top stitch 1/4" from finished curved edges.
  8. If desired, apply interfacing to WRONG sides of all spats fabric pieces.
  9. On RIGHT side of fabric, mark button and buttonholes on Outside Ankle pieces.
  10. With RIGHT sides together, pin fabric Outside Ankle to Inside Ankle fabric pieces. Stitch together in a 5/8" seam. Repeat with other fabric pieces and all lining pieces, so you have two spats made of fabric and two made of lining.
  11. Press seams to blend stitches and clip curves. Press seams to one side.
  12. On RIGHT side of fabric, center the open side of the tab over the center front seam, matching cut edges. Pin in place. If desired, hand baste together for extra security.
  13. With RIGHT sides together, pin spat to lining, matching center front and center back seams and all cut edges. Stitch together in a 5/8" seam, leaving opening as indicated on pattern piece to allow for turning.
  14. Press seams to blend stitching. Trim corners and clip curves.
  15. Turn spats RIGHT side out through opening, gently poking out corners. Press flat.
  16. With hand sewing needle and matching thread, slip stitch opening closed.
  17. Using a straight machine stitch, top stitch 1/4" all around edges of spats.
  18. Make 5 buttonholes as indicated by the markings made in Step 9. Sew 5 buttons where indicated by the markings made in Step 9.
  19. Fold down tab to front of spats. Sew button to center of tab, sewing through all thicknesses.
