Use a standard sewing machine to embroider a modern tribal design using on this easy, chic clutch purse.

Loading the bobbins with embroidery floss is easy with time-saving tools:

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Load a few bobbins with embroidery thread, using the Simplicity® Deluxe SideWinder and Mini Swift.
  2. Cut two pieces each of fabric, interfacing and lining – each piece should measure 12" x 15"
  3. Following manufacturer's directions, fuse interfacing to WRONG side of fabric.
  4. On WRONG side of fabric, draw desired decorative design directly onto interfaced pieces with fabric marking pencil. Design shown here covered the bottom half of each piece of fabric.
  5. Insert a bobbin loaded with embroidery thread into the sewing machine. Thread the sewing machine with matching color of standard sewing thread.
  6. Set the desired stitch pattern, length and width – we recommend testing on a scrap of fabric until you get the look you want.
  7. With WRONG side of fabric facing you, machine stitch along marked lines; change bobbins, stitch patterns and colors as desired.

Assembling the Clutch:

  1. Lay one piece of outer fabric, RIGHT side up, with embroidery at bottom.
  2. Lay closed zipper face down, with pull at the left, centering on fabric and lining up the top edges.
  3. Lay lining piece with WRONG side up over zipper and outer fabric, forming a "sandwich". Line up top of lining with tops of zipper and outer fabric. Pin together.
  4. Using a zipper foot, stitch through all layers, stitching as close as possible to zipper teeth and removing pins as you sew.
  5. Flip WRONG sides together and press.
  6. Lay remaining outer fabric piece with RIGHT side facing up and embroidery at top.
  7. Center zipper on outer piece face down, with pull at left.
  8. Lay remaining lining piece with WRONG side up over zipper and outer fabric, forming a "sandwich". Line up all top edges. Pin together.
  9. Using a zipper foot, stitch through all layers, stitching as close as possible to zipper teeth and removing pins as you sew.
  10. Switch back to regular presser foot. Top stitch on either side of the zipper, through all layers.
  11. Separate fabric and lining layers so that RIGHT sides of fabric and RIGHT sides of lining are facing each other. Move zipper pull to center of the zipper.
  12. Starting at each end of the zipper, stitch outwards to the edge, closing any gap that exists between zipper and edge.
  13. Matching cut edges, pin lining pieces together and fabric pieces together. Stitch in a 1/2" seam, removing pins as you sew. Leave a 3" opening in the lining for turning.
  14. Clip corners. Pull clutch through the opening left in the lining RIGHT side out and gently push out all corners.
  15. Turn seam allowance at opening to the inside and pin closed. Stitch opening closed, stitching 1/8" from the edge.
  16. Fold the clutch so zipper faces the bottom at desired size; use photo as a guide.
  17. Embellish clutch with seed beads and sequin trim as desired.
