Double Chain foundation (DCf): Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up 1 loop (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through both loops.
To make next st, *pass hook through loop farthest from hook of st just completed, yo and pull through loop, yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * for desired length. One side of the foundation chain will look like stitches and one side will look like chains.
Work Double Chain foundation for 25 sts.
Rnd 1 (RS): Starting on the stitch side of the foundation ch, ch 5, skip 4 sts, sc in next st, *ch 5, skip 3 sts, sc in next st, rep from * to end of stitch side of DCf – 6 ch-5 spaces made. Do not turn. Working along the chain side of the DCf, ch 5, sc in first ch of DCf, *ch 5, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch, rep from * to end of chain side of DCf – 13 ch-5 spaces. Do not turn.
Pm in first ch-5 space and move marker up each rnd. Continuing to work in rounds without joining, *ch 5, sc in next ch-5 space; rep from * for 16 rnds or to desired length, ending in first ch-space of rnd.
Rnd 1: 2 sl st in same space, 3 sc in next 13 ch-5 spaces, sc once more in last loop – 40 sc.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around. Fasten off.
Mark 6 sts on each side of tote, making sure there are 14 sc between marked strap areas.
The strap will be worked with right side facing at all times using a technique called Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS).
Row 1: With RS facing and leaving a 7" (18 cm) tail, insert hook in first marked sc on one side, yo and pull up a loop; *leaving loops on hook, insert hook in next sc, yo and pull up a loop; rep from * 4 more times – 6 loops on hook.
Row 2: Working back along row in opposite direction, yo and pull through 1 loop, *yo and pull through next 2 loops; rep from * across – 1 loop on hook.
Row 3: Skip first vertical bar, insert hook under next vertical bar, yo and pull up a loop; *insert hook under next vertical bar, yo and pull up a loop; rep from * to end – 6 loops on hook.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 until strap measures 34" (86 cm) or desired length.
To complete the strap, line up the 6 loops on the hook with the marked 6 sc stitches on the opposite side of the tote. *Work a sc through both the sc on the tote and the corresponding loop on the hook; rep from * to join all 6 scs with the 6 loops on the hook.
Fasten off, and leaving a 7" (18 cm) tail.
- Thread desired number of pony beads on beginning and ending tails at the base of each strap as shown on picture. Knot to fasten. Weave in ends.
