Knit Ear Warmer Horseshoes Hat
Cozy and stylish, this knit hat with toasty ear warmers built right in looks great with any cold-weather outerwear, from peacoat to parka.

Skill Level: Intermediate


    BO-bind off; CO-cast on; k-knit; k2tog- knit 2 sts together; kfb-knit in front and back of st; LH-left-hand; p-purl; rep-repeat; RH-right-hand; RS-Right Side; st(s)-stitch(es); tbl-through back loop(s); WS-wrong side; wyib-with yarn in back; yo-yarn over


    Adult: 20" (51 cm) circumference

Materials Needed:


    14.5 sts & 18 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch.

Special Stitches:

    Horseshoe Wrap (HW) (worked over 3 sts): Wyib sl next 3 sts onto RH needle, bring yarn to front of work and sl same 3 sts back onto LH needle; bring yarn around front of these 3 sts and to back of work, (k1, yo, k2tog-tbl) over same 3 sts.

Pattern Stitches:

    Horseshoe Rib (multiple of 8+1)
    Row 1 RS: P1, *k3, p1, k3-tbl, p1, rep from * across.
    Row 2: Purl.
    Row 3: P1, HW, p1, k3-tbl, p1, rep from * across.
    Row 4: Rep Row 2.
    Rep Rows 1-4 for pattern.


    NOTE: Hat is worked flat then closed with a seam.

    CO 65 sts. Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st for 6 rows, ending with a WS row. The bottom edge will curl gently.
    Work Horseshoe Rib Pattern until piece measures 7½" (19 cm) from beginning.
    Eyelet row: K1, yo, k1, *k2, yo, k2tog, rep from * to last 3 sts, k3—16 eyelets.
    Beginning with a WS row, work even in St st for 4 rows.
    With WS facing, BO knitwise.

    Ear flaps (Make 2)
    CO 33 sts, BO 30 sts knitwise—3 sts remain.
    Row 1 RS: Kfb, knit to last st, kfb—2 sts increased.
    Row 2: Purl.
    Rep Rows 1 & 2 three times—11 sts.
    Work even in St st for 3 rows.


    Sew sides together. Weave in ends.
    Top cord: CO 50 sts, BO 50 sts knitwise to create a cord about 16" (40.5 cm) long. Weave in ends.
    Weave cord in and out of eyelets leaving an equal amount of cord on each end. Pull tight and tie cord ends in a knot. Sew ear flaps to inside of hat on opposite sides as shown in picture. Weave in remaining ends.
