Royal Shrug

This elegant, soft shrug is the perfect accompaniment to your most fancy evening wear. Wear it over this Jessica McClintock gown, Simplicity® sewing pattern 2400 to get the flawlessly regal look shown here.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

ABBREVIATIONS:

BO = bind off; Ch = chain; CO = cast on; dec = decrease; inc = increase; k = knit; kfb = knit in front and back of same stitch; RS = right side; Sc = single crochet; sl = slip; st = stitch; sts = stitches; WS = wrong side

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Approx. 424 (460, 500, 515, 530) yards of worsted weight mohair or angora yarn
    *We used 4 (5, 5, 5, 5) balls of Classic Elite La Gran Mohair (78.4% mohair/17.3% wool/4.3% nylon, 106 yards/50g) in color 6501 Bleached White.
  • Size US 9 (5.5 mm) Boye® knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge – use aluminum straights or circulars (29" or longer) or Needlemaster® Kit
  • Size US G (4.5 mm) crochet hook (optional)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Row counter (optional)

SIZES:

Small (Medium, Large, Extra Large) – to fit bust sizes 34" (37", 40", 43", 46")

GAUGE:

16 sts = 4 inches (4 sts/inch) in stockinette stitch
SAVE TIME - CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Adjust needle size to achieve specified gauge.

DIRECTIONS:

NOTE – For all pieces, on all RS rows, sl first st as if to knit. On all WS row, sl first st as if to purl.

BACK

CO 70 (76, 82, 88, 94) sts.

Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Knit.
Row 3 (RS): Knit.
Row 4 (WS): Purl.

Repeat Rows 3 – 4 until piece measures 6", ending with a WS row (Row 4).

SHAPE ARMHOLES

BO 4 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts at beginning of next two rows, then dec 1 st each side every row 1 (2, 3, 4, 4) times, then every other row 3 (3, 4, 5, 6) times, then every 4 rows 2 (2, 2, 1, 1) times – 50 (54, 54, 56, 58) sts.

Continue even until piece measures 11.5" (12", 12.5", 13", 13") from CO edge, ending after working a WS row.

SHAPE NECK

Work 12 (14, 14, 15, 16) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and BO middle 26 sts, work to end of row. Working both sides at once with the separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st each neck edge once – 11 (13, 13, 14, 15) sts remain each side.

Continue even until piece measures approximately 13" (13.5", 14", 14.5", 14.5").

SHAPE NECK

BO 3 sts each neck edge 3 times, then BO 2 (4, 4, 5, 6) sts each neck edge once. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT

CO 30 (32, 34, 38, 40) sts.

Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Knit.
Row 3 (RS): Knit.
Row 4 (WS): Purl.

Repeat Rows 3 – 4 until piece measures 6", ending with a WS row (Row 4).

SHAPE ARMHOLE

BO 4 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts at beginning of next row, then dec 1 st at armhole edge every row 1 (2, 3, 4, 4) times, then every other row 3 (3, 4, 5, 6) times, and then every 4 rows 2 (2, 1, 1, 1) times – 20 (21, 21, 22, 22) sts.

Continue even until piece measures approximately 10" (10.5", 11", 11.5", 11.5") from CO, end after working a RS row.

SHAPE NECK

BO 3 (2, 2, 2, 1) sts at beginning of next row, BO 2 sts at neck edge once, then dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times, then at neck edge once more – 11 (13, 13, 14, 15) sts remain. Continue even until piece measures 13" (13.5", 14", 14.5", 14.5").

SHAPE SHOULDER

BO 3 sts at neck edge 3 times. BO all sts, fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT

Work as for LEFT FRONT, reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES make 2)

CO 36 sts.

Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Knit.
Row 3 (RS): Knit.
Row 4 (WS): Purl.

Work 8 rows even in stockinette stitch (knit on RS, purl on WS).

Next row (increase row [inc], RS): Sl 1, kfb, k to last 3 sts, kfb, k2.

Continuing in stockinette stitch, inc 1 st each side every 4 rows 0 (1, 3, 7, 9) times, every 6 rows 1 (6, 5, 2, 1) times, then every 8 rows 4 (0, 0, 0, 0) times – 54 (58, 60, 62, 64) sts.

Continue even until piece measures approximately 16" from CO edge, ending after working a WS row.

SHAPE CAP

BO 4 (5, 6, 6, 7) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every 4 rows 0 (0, 0, 1, 1) times, every other row 9 (12, 14, 14, 15) times, then every row 5 (3, 1, 1, 0) ties – 18 sts remain. BO 3 sts at beginning of next 4 rows – 6 sts remain. BO all sts, fasten off.

FINISHING:

For best results, block all pieces prior to seaming.

Graft together shoulder seams. Set in sleeves, and then sew sleeve and side seams. Weave in all ends.

SIMPLE CROCHETED EDGING (optional):

With RS facing and crochet hook, join with sl st to bottom of side seam where RIGHT FRONT meets BACK. Ch 1. Work 1 round of sc around entire edge of sweater body, working 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off. Repeat with sleeve edges, fasten off. Weave in all ends.
