Tree Skirt Assembly

Add smaller star units to the large center star. The corners may have a point of fabric extending out - just trim it even. Lay the completed top and the backing fabric right sides together. Pin top to backing. Cut backing to fit top. (Allow a little extra backing on the outside edges for insurance.)

Opening

schematic of tree skirtWith pencil, on the wrong side of the top, in the very center, draw around a small glass to make the opening for a tree trunk. With a ruler, draw a line from that circle to the bottom center of one of the corner triangles to form the slit. Sew 1/4" outside your pencil line, up one side of the slit, around the circle, and down the other side. Clip the curves, then turn and press.

Binding

Lay the tree skirt on top of the batting, and cut batting to fit, allowing a little extra around the outside edge. Insert the batting between the top and backing. Baste; quilt as desired. Cut five 2" strips of red. Piece together and fold in half, wrong sides together, and press. Sew binding to the tree skirt. Trim excess batting and backing. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back and stitch down by hand. Sew hooks and eyes to hold the opening together.
