finished size 33" x 33"
For this quilt, you could use yardage for the colors or choose a Honeybun or Jellyroll precut package. If using precuts, group the fabric strips into four colors and cut the pieces required for each color. You'll have a scrappy result, but a similar look.

assembling the strip sets
STEP 1 Sew two strip sets of 1-1/2" x 42" black and a color. Press toward the black. Cut into 48 – 1-1/2" wide units using the Jellyroll ruler. Repeat for each of the four colors.

STEP 2 Using the Step 1 units and the black 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles, assemble 16 units of each color as shown below. Press toward the rectangle.

STEP 3 Using the remainder of the Step 1 units, assemble 16 four-patches of each color. Press.

STEP 4 Sew black and colored 1-1/2" strips together to make strip sets; one for each color. Cut into 16—2-1/2" squares for each color.

STEP 5 Using the units from Steps 1,3 and 4 and the large black rectangles, assemble 16 blocks as shown, eight of each color.

assembling the quilt
STEP 1 Sew the blocks together in rows, alternating the colors and the orientation of the blocks. Press the row seams in alternating directions. Sew the rows together. Press the seams all one direction.

STEP 2 Using the last four colored 1-1/2" x 42" strips, sew them together end to end for borders. Measure and trim two borders the width of the quilt. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt, pressing toward the borders. Repeat for the side borders.
finishing the quilt
STEP 1 Trim the backing and batting to 6" larger than the quilt top. Layer the backing wrong side up, the batting and the quilt top right side up. Baste, then quilt as desired. Before binding, hand or machine baste (using a walking foot) a scant 1/4" from the edge of the quilt to prevent the layers from shifting.
STEP 2 Join the binding ends with diagonal seams pressed open. Fold in half, wrong sides together and press for a double binding. Sew to the quilt with a 1/4" seam, mitering the corners. Trim the excess batting and backing, turn the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch down by hand with matching thread. Refer to General Directions for more information on binding a quilt.
