How to Make a Dog Collar and Leash
Both collar and leash are made by braiding three strips of fabric together. Cut each fabric into 2” wide strips, cutting crosswise from selvage to selvage. 1/4 yard of fabric yields 4 strips, each measuring 2” wide by 44” long; this is enough for both the collar and the leash, with some fabric left over.
Step 1. Take three strips, one of each fabric. Trim each of these strips to measure 2” wide by 30” long.
Step 2. Layer the ends of the three strips and pull through one side of the buckle. Fold back and machine stitch through all layers, close to the buckle.
Step 3. Braid the three strips for about 2”, and then loop the two outside strips around the straight edge of the D-ring. Continue braiding to the end.
Step 4. Pull the end through the remaining buckle piece.
Step 5. Fit the collar around the dog’s neck, with enough room to fit two fingers between the dog’s neck and the collar. Pull the end through the buckle to fit.
Step 6. Fold the braid back onto itself, machine stitch through all layers to secure, stitching close to the buckle. Trim off excess.
Step 1. Piece together two strips of fabric by overlapping ends ¼” and machine stitching together. Repeat with remaining strips. This will result in three strips, each measuring 2” wide by 89 ½” long. Trim each strip to measure 85” long.
Step 2. Layer the ends of the three strips and pull through the end of the slide release buckle. Fold back and machine stitch through all layers, close to the buckle.
Step 3. Braid the three strips, all the way to the end.
Step 4. Fold braid back onto itself 8” to form hand loop. Machine stitch at the end through all layers to secure.
