Materials Needed:

  • 11" X 17" Fabric Remnant
  • 8 1/2" X 11" Lightweight Fusible Interfacing Remnant
  • 1 1/4 Yards of Venice Lace
  • 1 1/4 Yards of 5/8" Wide Ribbon to match
  • Assorted Clear and Metallic Beads and Sequins
  • Thread to match

Note:
Read through all of the instructions before cutting and sewing.

Instructions

Step 1. Draw a bib shape on paper OR use the bib pattern piece from Simplicity pattern 2472.

Step 2. Fold fabric remnant in half having fabric right sides together. Pin pattern onto fabric and cut out. Remove pattern.

Step 3. Pin pattern piece onto interfacing remnant. Cut out. Fuse interfacing to wrong side of one bib section.

Step 4. Cut ribbon into two equal lengths. On outside of interfaced bib, pin end of each ribbon section over small dots. Fold up ends of ribbon in pin place so that way they will not get caught in the outer seams.

Step 5. With right sides together, pin bib sections together, having raw edges even. Stitch outer edges with a 3/8" seam, leaving an opening along one edge to turn. Trim seam to 1/4". Clip curves and cut across points.

Step 6. Turn bib right side out and press. Turn under opening edges and slipstitch together to close.

Step 7. Study the pattern of lace and note where you can cut along a motif to separate it from the rest of the lace.

Step 8. On outside, pin lace to upper edge of bib, placing upper edge of lace just over finished edge of bib. Make sure that the side edges start and stop with a lace motif. Trim ends of lace even with finished side edges.

Step 9. To make lace lie flat, cut along the motifs where necessary, following the curve of bib. Do not cut through the entire width of lace, rather form a “hinge” to help smooth lace while pinning. The motifs will overlap and make a pleasing design. Once lace is flat, hand-sew or slipstitch all the outer and cut edges of lace in place, making sure that your stitches catches the bib as well.

Step 10. Pin and sew a second row of lace below the first row, having the upper edge of lace overlap the lower edge of lace.

Step 11. Embellish lace with beads or a combination of sequins and beads.

Step 12. Place bib around your neck and tie ends in a bow at the back of your neck. Enjoy your new fashion bib!
