ch-chain; dc-double crochet; rep-repeat; sc-single crochet; st(s)-stitch(es)

One size: 4" (10 cm) wide x 50" (127 cm) long, excluding fringe

  • #4 worsted weight yarn: we used Lion Brand® Amazing® (53% wool/47% acrylic), 1.75 oz (50 g), 147 yd (135 m) – 1 ball #212 Mauna Loa
  • Boye® crochet hook size J-10 (6.0 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Boye® hand sewing tapestry needle

See the Supply List for items you can purchase here.

12 sc and 15 rows = 4" (10 cm). Gauge is not critical for this project.

The one-row crochet pattern forms a mesh. Strands of the remaining yarn are cut and woven through the mesh columns in an alternating pattern. When multi-color yarn is used, the mesh forms horizontal stripes of recurring colors and the woven strands form vertical stripes to create the appearance of plaid.

Step 2

Foundation row: Ch 20, dc in 6th ch from hook (counts as dc, ch 1 and skip 1 ch), *ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch, rep from * across, turn.

Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), skip ¬first dc, *dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from *, ending last dc in 3rd ch of turning ch of row below, turn.

Rep Row 1 until piece is 50" (127 cm) long or desired length. Fasten off.

Step 3

Weave in ends. Lay mesh at and carefully measure length.

Cut 32 strands of remaining yarn 20" (51 cm) longer than scarf – 4 strands for each of the 8 vertical columns in the mesh.

*Hold 4 strands together. To weave, thread yarn needle with all four strands and weave in and out of the vertical mesh alternating over/under at each row, and leaving an equal length of tail at each end. Arrange the tails at each end of the column with 2 to the back and two to the front. Knot front tail and back tail together to form fringe. Rep from * for remaining 7 mesh columns. Trim fringe.
