16 sts and 22 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. To save time, take time to check gauge.
M1-L (Make 1-Left): With the left needle tip, lift strand between needles from front to back; knit the lifted loop through the back loop to twist the stitch—1 st increased.
M1-R (Make 1-Right): With left needle tip, lift strand between needles from back to front; knit the lifted loop through the front loop to twist the stitch—1 st increased.
Kfb (Knit in front and back): Knit into the front of the stitch, and leave on the LH needle; knit the same stitch again through the back loop, then drop the stitch from the needle—1 st increased.
Ssk (Slip, slip, knit): Slip the next two stitches, one at a time, as if to knit; insert the LH needle into the fronts of these two stitches and knit them together—1 st decreased.
Head (Make 2)
With B, CO 30 sts.
Rows 1 & 3: Knit.
Rows 2 & 4: Purl.
Row 5: *K1, k2tog; rep from * across—20 sts.
Rows 6 & 8: Purl.
Row 7: *K2tog; rep from * across—10 sts.
Row 9: *P2tog; rep from * across—5 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a 12" (30.5 cm) tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and run tail through last 5 sts. Pull tight to gather. Sew the sides together to form a disc.
Weave in ends for the first disc. For the second disc, use the threaded tail to sew the first disc to the second to form the puppy's head. Before making the last few sts, stuff with fiberfill, then finish sewing and weave in ends.
Snout and Paws
(Make 5 in A for snout and paws; make 4 in B for paws)
CO 16 sts.
Row 1: *K2tog; rep from * across—8 sts.
Row 2: *P2tog; rep from * across—4 sts.
Row 3: (K2tog) twice—2 sts.
To Finish Snout
Cut A, leaving a 12" (30.5 cm) tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and run tail through last 2 sts. Pull tight to gather. Sew sides together to form a disc. Use remaining yarn tail to sew onto head.
To Finish Paws
Tie off and sew the remaining pieces in the same manner as the snout. Weave in all tails of A. Thread the longest tail of B on to yarn needle and sew an A piece to a B piece. Before making the last few sts, stuff center with the other remaining tail to make the paw puffy. Repeat process to make three more paws, for a total of four paws.
Ears (Make 2 in A and 2 in B)
CO 3 sts.
Row 1: Kfb, k1, Kfb—5 sts.
Row 2: and all WS rows Purl.
Row 3: K1, M1-R, k3, M1-L, k1—7 sts. Row 5: K1, M1-R, k5, M1-L, k1—9 sts.
Row 7: K2tog, k5, ssk—7 sts.
Row 9: K2tog, k3, ssk—5 sts.
Row 11: K2tog, k1, ssk—3 sts.
Rows 12-18: Work even in stockinette (knit one row, purl one row). Cut yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail on the A pieces and a 20" (51 cm) tail on the B pieces.
Weave in all ends except the longest B tails. Seam one B piece to one A piece using the long B tail. Repeat to make the second ear.
Use photo as a guide for placement of pieces. With B, sew ears to head. With A, sew snout to center of head. Use A to embroider eyes and B to make nose. Split a strand of A into a single ply and use it to embroider whiskers. Weave in all remaining ends.
To Make the Dog's "Legs"
Cut three 24" (61 cm) strands of B. Holding 3 strands together, make a knot about 8" (20 cm) from one end. Use longer pieces to make an 8" (20 cm) braid. About 8" (20 cm) of unbraided yarn will remain. Thread the unknotted end of braid onto yarn needle. Push braid through the A side of one paw. Pull so the knot is snug against the paw. Next push the needle through the lower part of the puppy’s head near the seam and centered to the nose and mouth. Finally, push the needle through the B side of a second paw.
Adjust the length of the braid until the paws hang evenly. Mark a spot on the braid to make a second knot. Move the paw out of the way to form the knot. Push the paw down so it is snug against the knot. To trim long ends so they don’t unravel, thread yarn tails onto yarn needle and push back through the paw at the knot. Pull tail through to the other side of the paw. Trim the tail at the surface of the paw. Repeat on other paw. Repeat the process for the second set of legs and paws.
