French knot: Thread yarn needle with desired color. Secure yarn tail on WS. Insert needle into fabric from WS to RS and draw yarn through. Wrap the thread twice around the needle, then insert needle into fabric as close as possible to original point. Draw yarn through to WS, keeping tension on working yarn to allow knot to be formed on surface of fabric.
Knitted-on cast-on: Make a slip knot and place on needle – 1 st. Hold needle with stitch in left hand. *Insert the empty RH needle into the st as if to knit, knit the stitch but do not drop the st from the LH needle. Move new st on RH needle onto LH needle – 1 more st cast on. Rep from * until the desired number of stitches are cast on.
W&t (wrap and turn): On RS: Bring yarn between needles to front, slip next unworked st from LH needle to RH needle, bring yarn to back between needles, slip same st back to LH needle, turn work.
On WS: Bring yarn between needles to back, slip next unworked st from LH needle to RH needle, bring yarn to front between needles, slip same st back to LH needle, turn work.
Loosely CO 84 sts.

Cut yarn and thread tail with yarn needle. Run the tail back through the remaining 12 sts; pull tight to close. Use tail to sew center hole closed; sew back seam. Weave in ends.
Note: The curved petals are made using a technique called “short rows.” A short row is created when the knitting is turned before a row is complete.
Petal 1: Using a knitted-on cast-on, CO 8 sts. *K6, w&t; p4, w&t; k3, w&t; p2, w&t; k1, w&t; purl to end, turn**. Do NOT fasten off yarn.
Petal 2: CO 8 sts by inserting the empty needle in the first st of the previous petal and using a knitted-on cast on to add 8 new sts to needle – 16 sts. Rep between * and **.
Petal 3: CO 8 sts – 24 sts. Repeat pattern between * and **.
Petal 4: CO 8 sts – 32 sts. Repeat pattern between * and **.
Petal 5: CO on 8 sts – 40 sts. Repeat pattern between * and **.
Dec Row 1 (RS): (K2tog) across – 20 sts.
Dec Row 2: (P2tog) across – 10 sts.
Dec Row 3: (K2tog) across – 5 sts.
Dec Row 4: (P2tog) 2 times, p1 – 3 sts.
Cut yarn. Thread tail onto yarn needle. Run tail through the last 3 sts and pull tight to gather center. Seam the first petal to the last and weave in end. If desired, decorate the center with French knots, leaving a long tail to sew onto hat.
Using the French knot tail, attach the flower to the hat; tie off and weave in end at the back of the hat. If desired, further embellish the center of the flower by using several long overcast stitches coming out of the center of the flower in a contrasting color yarn (as shown in photo). This technique will also make the flower sit more securely on the hat.
